There are two categories of plants that can help you get great sleep. One includes plants that have a smell that can influence you to sleep and the other is efficient in filtering harmful chemicals that could prevent you from getting a good night’s rest.

Jasmine

Jasmine is a flowering plant that can be kept inside the bedroom to enjoy its sweet smell. Producers of essential oils rank this as one of the most used scents for relaxation and to reduce anxiety. It is also great in preparation when you expect the next day to be mentally stressful. Sleep is noticeably better, with fewer bouts of wakefulness. This scent is great for those who cannot go back to sleep once their sleep is disturbed.

It prefers direct sunlight but can work with indirect sun exposure near a window. It is important to keep the soil in the pot moist but not too wet.

Valerian

The scent of the small pink and white Valerian flowers is a great help for the sleep-deprived. Keep a flowering Valerian plant in your bedroom to help relax the nervous system and ease tension.

Valerian plants need a lot of sunlight (about 6 hours daily) and water. Place it near a window or on the window sill to get sun exposure.

Lavender

Lavender is a popular answer to those who wish to know how to sleep better. Not all varieties of lavender have the trademark smell. Varieties with the famous smell include, but are not limited to, English lavender, French Lavender, and Spanish lavender. These induce deep sleep efficiently and lowers the heart rate to achieve a night of peaceful sleep.

Lavender requires several hours a day of direct sunlight. You should put it out during the day and bring the pot in the bedroom at night.

Gardenia

Gardenia is another flowering plant that has very good sleep-inducing effects. The effect has often been compared to medications given to those with sleep disorders. GABA receptors in the brain can be regulated by the scent of the flowers, thereby helping to reduce anxiety and stress.

Gardenias do well even with indirect sunlight and wet but not flooded soil.

Passionflower

Passionflowers can help to improve the mood of an individual while inducing sleep. The scent from its flowers is soothing and can ease the tension from a stressful day. It is a very effective relaxant and induces calm.

Passionflowers thrive in full and direct sunlight, for several hours a day. They grow well in moist, well-drained soil. You can bring the pot in the bedroom at night.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a well-known plant that is used for a variety of purposes. To sleep better, place one in your room to increase oxygen levels and to filter dangerous air pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde. Keep the plant in your room and experience better oxygen levels, especially at night.

Aloe Vera thrives does well in indirect sunlight when necessary and should be watered a few times a week only. It is a strong, hardy plant that brings a lot of benefits.

Areca Palm

The Areca Palm acts as an air filter for formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide. NASA has included it in its list plants that effectively filter air. It does not need much exposure to sunlight but will need to be watered every day. It can grow big so it is best placed on the floor.

This palm can make do with indirect light but should be brought out every few months for exposure to direct sunlight. It prefers wet but not flooded soil in a well-drained pot.

Peace Lilies

Peace lilies are great as indoor plants because they clear the air of pollutants (specifically, toluene and xylene). Not only that, but it also gives you an ample amount of oxygen for better sleep since it releases oxygen at night. It is toxic to animals so you should train your pets to leave it alone.

Peace lilies can survive with soft, indirect sunlight. Water it once a week in your bedroom but put it out for direct sunlight at least once a month.

Snake Plant

The Snake plant is highly recommended for filtering dangerous pollutants from the air as well as supplying much-needed oxygen in your room. Similar to aloe vera, it releases oxygen at night (instead of during the day), increasing oxygen levels while you are asleep. The high levels of oxygen help you sleep better and longer.

This hardy plant grows well under low light conditions and can go for several days without water. For faster propagation, cut a full-grown leaf and place it in a jar of water. It will grow roots after several days and can be replanted when the roots are an inch long.

Golden Pothos

Golden Pothos is a hanging plant that purifies the air of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and other pollutants. With the reduced level of air pollutants in your room, sleep will be better and longer. Since this is a hanging plant, you can decorate it on a pedestal or low table and admire its variegated leaves.

Golden Pothos plants do well under filtered or indirect sunlight. Water it when the soil is dry.
